Christian Art Work by John Jones
John Jones is an acclaimed painter known for his narrative style and for his interest in
taking on meaningful and socially relevant topics. Born in South Carolina in 1950, Jones has
been especially interested in the depictions of African Americans throughout history. Jones
was shocked to discover that confederacy money had illustrations of African slaves, and his
greatest artistic achievement thus far has been a series of paintings inspired by
drawings on confederate funds. His exhibit: Confederate Currency: The Color of Money
has received national notice both from the artistic world and from art historians. His
depictions of the African slave as strong and yet tied by circumstance paint an interesting
picture of the history of African Americans. Many of Jones' other works contrast this
history with the present day depiction of blacks in the United States.
Jones' work will really have you thinking about the way the US has viewed the African
American. These pictures are by no means denigrating of blacks but rather a celebration of
the strong character of the African American people that helped them tolerate slavery but
never give up on in their pursuit of basic human rights. Jones uses oils, acrylics and
watercolors to convey his point of view in numerous scenes, which are noted for their
realism and fine detail.
